A salesman for Wang came to us with their programable calculator, and as a result we developed the program that calculated Yield To Maturity for bonds using the Wang calculator. I think I can safely say that anyone who has had experience on a Wang VS system as a programer, analyst, user or worked for Wang knows what a special experience that was and what a great product that never received the praise that it should have gotten. Anyway, enough emotion. My name is Brad King and I live in San Antonio, Texas and worked as a customer field engineer for Wang Labs in the 1980s. I then continued working with Wang systems with Intelogic Trace, a 3rd party nationwide maintenance company through the mid 1990s and then started my own service company until 2001. I loved the great times and friends that I met through the years and spent some time supporting the New York Transit Authority’s vast VS network in the 1990s and met many great NYC based Wang CEs. My mother, Florence Prives, was Dr Wang’s first personal secretary when he began his business on the second floor of an industrial building in Cambridge, MA in the early 1950s. She continued working with him when he moved to Natick in the latter part of the 1950s and eventually resigned when he moved to Tewksbury. I remember visiting his home when he moved to Concord as his business grew.

In my opinion, Wang products were ahead of their time in many areas. This is evidenced by the number of times I see others rediscovering them as if they were a new concept or technology. Even some of the names are borrowed from Wang. When I first joined Wang and went into the service department, I saw many products and names on products that later were claimed to be new and coined by others. Hmmm…

I am in the UK and worked for Wang since 1987. We’ve been in contact before, but I doubt you will remember!

I was UK top level software support (OS, Pace, Office, WSN etc), and when the VS folded in around 2000 they put me onto project management.

Well, my time with the company is just about to end, as they are laying me off from end of this month.

All of my best memories go back to the Wang days. And even then we always seemed to be at risk of being laid off. I was just reading about Wang on Wikipedia, I’d forgotten about Joe Tucci, and also Rick Miller.

I was just reading your site and found out there is a new VS. Do you have any idea where these have been sold, and if the customers would have any requirements for old VS skills, as I would much prefer to be technical than carry on being a project manager!!

It was great to read your site, it brought back many happy memories.

Enjoyed the challenges of opening many major accounts for Wang 2200, MVP and VS series systems with NASA, US Navy, a slew of banks, auto dealers, Nascar, manufacturing firms, City governments and Insurance sales companies… Love to here from any of the Fla Wang folks and the 3rd party software folks. I went on to sell Used Wang and DEC systems to small business accounts and then jumped headlong into IBM and PC compatable sales as one of the first resellers for IBM, Zenith, Wang PC, Columbia, Compaq etc etc. Spend all of the 80’s and early 90’s selling, installing PC’s from Lousiana in over 5000 small business in the southern states with sub dealers like Mike Dell.

Got into pushing factory refurbs to Sams Club, Costco, Tigerdirect and others advertising closeouts in Computer Shopper. Still sell the hardware today but mostly for client’s back office systems who have me design and manage their ecommerce web sites. Guess I’m now a dinosaur in both computer sales and internet site development since launching 3 sponsor sites for the 1996 US Olympic in Atlanta Ga. Still working at automating brick-n-mortar and online businesses every day as part of my retirement plan… LOL.

One site I’ve worked on for years is the highest converting product web site in the world… www.suspenders.com for over 5 years averaging 1 sale per 15 -18 visitors. It’s one of over 100 sites I designed and launched.

Meeting and talking with Doctor An Wang in Lowell was an honor… but I was especially awed by the smarts of John Cunningham who should have run as a Ma. Senator or USA President as the man was well versed in every subject from politics to IT and gifted speaker.

Alan Davis use to be the CEO then followed by Mike Todman who was brought over from the States.

Recently for some unknown reason Wang has been on my mind and I am currently trying to purchase the following books:

I was awarded the outstanding UK Employee award in 1990 presented by Mike Todman.

Howard Duley writes: Wang Labs, Tewksbury, I was Doctor Wang’s private technician after Prentice Robinson moved up to engineer. I had two stints with the Doctor, from 1965-1966 and 1967- to April 1969. Also worked for Frank Trantenella when he was there. I remember all the originals. Remember when the Doctor use to bring Freddie and Courtney up to the factory on Saturdays and they would wander around the place like they owned it. Hey — I guess they did. Came into contact with Dick Ventrillo after thirty years. It was wonderful to see him and his wife. Someone should start a Wang reunion.

In LYON, 2nd largest city in France, we have with 10 to 20 former Wang people a common lunch every month ! – from a lot of years and still go on in 2002 (the first Monday in the month , at the “Table de Dane” restaurant, located in LYON 9th district, Quai Arloing) . My name is Neal Brush. I worked in CSO Eastern Region in various capacities from July 1987 until July 1990. I was very pleasantly surprized to find this page as I haven’t spoken with anyone with Wang ties in several years. How to find people on the Internet

[Note: this writeup on how to find people is considerably out of date but may still be helpful in principle]

These are the tools I’ve found most useful for finding people. The first two are general Web and/or USENET search engines with huge and frequently updated databases. The second two are databases of people, primarily searchable by name.

Alta Vista: A truly awesome Net database, DEC’s Alta Vista indexes every word of every Web document it finds, and indexes every word of some 13,000 USENET newsgroups as well as letting you retrieve the full text of USENET posts on which you get “hits.”
Lycos: With 34.6 million URLs indexed (as of Mar 13, 1996), Lycos is doing well as the original massive Web database, far ahead of the others until Alta Vista challenged it in late 1995.
Four11: This is a database of people that looks like it was built by scanning USENET postings. People who register can update their listings with additional detail. Otherwise it will show only name and e-mail address, with no date of entry. To use Four11, you should register, get your password by e-mail, log on to Four11 using your password, then bookmark your page. This allows quick logon later.
Switchboard: This looks very much like one of those CD-ROM national “phone books” with the exception that registered users can update their listings. It is a massive name, address and phone number database but contains no e-mail or other Internet information. It has a business section that I’ve had little reason to use, though you might find it useful. Follow the link to the Find People page and bookmark it.

Hints for finding people

When searching by name with any engine except Switchboard, use only enough of the first name to allow hits on variations (“Eve” to find “Eve” and “Evelyn,” “Fran” to find “Francis” and “Frank”). Switchboard only wildcards the last name if you omit the first name entirely.

Start wide and narrow down. If you are too specific, you may not find what you are looking for. It’s better to start with a wide search and narrow it as you see what comes back. In some cases a surname may be so rare that it alone yields only a few hits. While none of them may be the person you seek, one or more may be related to him or her, and would not be visible if you were to search for the exact name you seek.

Sometimes you will find a family member instead of the person you seek. This can be useful, of course, if you don’t overlook it as a possibility.

Take a moment to examine the Help or Hints provided on each of the search pages before you use them. Go back and look again if you don’t get the results you expect.

A special trick

If you have your own Web pages,

Create a page containing the names of people you can’t find
Give it a meaningful title, like “People I’d Like to Find”
Make the first paragraph a concise explanation that you’d like to hear from people who find the page in their Web searches
If at all possible put a “visit” or “hit” counter on the page (if your ISP doesn’t support this, look at Web Counter for a neat third-party solution)
Put a “mailto” link containing your e-mail address on the page
Do not put a link to this new page on any of your other pages, so that the only way for anyone to find the page is through a search engine
NOTE: It seems that the search engines drop such “orphaned” pages from their databases. The solution is to include a link to the page in your main page, but make it invisible by setting its text color to match the background and putting it in an obscure location on the page. Presumably your main page will be found and indexed on a regular basis, and then so will any pages linked from it.
Submit the URL of the page to the major search sites (see the main pages of each search engine for an “Add URL” link)
Periodically check the search engines and resubmit your page as necessary. Alta Vista in particular seems to *lose* pages at a very high rate.

Now, if you’re looking for, say, Joe Smith, and Joe or a friend searches for his name, he (they) will find your page. The brief abstract shown in the search result listing will clearly explain that you wish to hear from people whose names are on your “lost people” page. To avoid mistaken identity cases you can include private identifying keywords that would only be meaningful to the person(s) you seek, and that don’t communicate a lot of information to anyone else
